While I haven't used this organization personally, they do come highly recommended. They specialize in entertaining and caring for children. I picked up their flyer, which says "A child's birthday or something else to celebrate? Entertainment at a summer or family event?" They have many possible options to entertain your children - clowns, magicians, face painting, and more. They can even organize child care at a large event, such as a wedding.

Not cheap but highly recommended are reptile party shows where kids and adults get to hold live animals like snakes and crocodiles. It's a good diversion from the usual fare of junk food.
