German Course for Women, With Childcare

From Astrid...thanks so much!!!
Here is some information on a German language course that has JUST begun. If interested, please contact Sabina Bacon, whose contact information is below.

Sabina Bacon is doing german lessons at the mothers centre in Hablerstr near Goethplatz, she has organised 2 girls to look after toddlers/babies in the nextdoor room/play area while doing so. My son and I went last week for the first lesson - there were 2 american ladies there and their babies (under ages of 2) and it worked quite well - once the kids settled to playing and realised that the mums were in the next room.

"Everybody is welcome and the Level for the teaching will be between a beginner to an advanced beginner up to A1++/A2-. There will be two babysitters, one English mother tongue the other German. After that we will meet 10 times every Tuesday from 09.30 to 11.30 am. The cost will be 240 Euro for the teaching. Which is exactly 9 Euros for the teaching hour (45min) In this course I will accept a reduction in the fee for absence or holiday for more than 1 week, if you can let me know in advance. The service of the babysitter is flexible and costs 10 Euros for the two hours if you want to take advantage of. There will alway be both babysitters and they will look after a maximum of 8 kids or babys. Children on the lap or in a sling are also very welcome in the teaching room as long as it allows you and the others to still take part in the lessons somehow.
If that sounds interesting to you, I would love you to come and see us tomorrow and I can sent you more details."

Baby Stuff Flea Market

Hi everyone,

The Familienzentrum in Schwabing is having a flea market on September 24th, 9:00-13:00.
It will be selling baby and children's clothes, toys, equipment etc, and some maternity wear.
If anyone is interested in selling any of their baby and children's articles, then please drop me an email briefly stating what you would like to sell.
Due to the smaller venue we unfortunately need to limit bigger items, like buggies, high chairs, bouncers etc.
Also, we will do the selling for you!:-)
All you would need to do is price everything up, and write an assigned number on the tag, drop it off on Friday afternoon, and we will hopefully sell it for you!
Totals will be added up afterwards, and 20% of all profits will be donated to the FamilienZentrum, and the rest is yours to come and pick up!
Anything left can be picked up in the afternoon, or I am organising someone from a local charity to pick up anything that hasn't been sold, if you are happy to donate it. It's up to you!
If you are interested in selling or would like to help out on the day, please email me on mailtmarshall@gmail.com.
Or if you have any questions etc, please contact me.
For those not interested in selling you may be interested in coming along. I will send out another email closer to the time to remind you all of the date, time, and address.

Many thanks,
Tracy Marshall

Saskia's Welcome

(Saskia's Welcome, May 2009)
Welcome to the IWC Mother's Corner Blog! We have been really behind the times, relying on the Yahoo Group for all of our communication needs. While it works fine as a listserv, its website leaves a lot to be desired, and for that reason I'm going to try and move us over to this blog. At the moment, it's not password-protected because I want to just try it out the easy way and see what kind of reception it gets. Please comment and let me know what you think. The advantage of a blog is that posts can be "labeled", which allows them to be sorted. An index will be automatically created, so information can be easily found. For example, if someone posts about a gynecologist they like/don't like, the post will be labeled "doctors". By clicking on the "doctors" link, the blog engine will automatically bring up all posts with that label.

Anyone in the MC will be able to post directly to the blog, or you can send your posts to me. Posts can contain information or just thoughts for reflection. They can also contain questions, and other MC members can comment and give answers.

Please let me know your thoughts!
I'll be posting some actual information soon :)
Saskia,
MC Coordinator

Advocate for Non-German Students in German Schools

From Lauren Conroy:
I wanted to give you the international student association number and information from Gerdi Poellinger, the woman I dealt with regarding Gymnasium placement and language needs. This woman helps international families navigate the German school system in Munich. Wow! An advocate for us! She apparently speaks many languages, so don't be afraid to call :)
Her email is

She is in the office on Fridays only and answers emails when she can.

Avocado Salad with Tomatoes and Lime

Ok, so was thinking that starting off with some salads for summer would be good and here is one that has all easy ingredients to find around Munich...it goes really well with anything and I actually serve it along side of grilled foods as a sort of garnish, with a full green, tossed salad and grilled zuchini, bread spreads (like antipasti or avjar) and fresh bread. Crunchy, colorful and really tasty, when the avocados are ripe.

For the rice wine vinegar, I go to the Chinese store at Ostbahnhof. They have a bunch of great Asian food ingredients as well as condensced milk, which I use to make pumpkin pie/bread. Another recipe I can provide in the Fall as I have a homemade recipe that is really tasty too.....

Note: 1c is roughly 100 grams...so I just guestimate my conversions, and use my cookbook for oven temps...

AVOCADO SALAD WITH TOMATOES AND LIME: via Bobby Flay's kitchen

1/4 cup(s) fresh lime juice
2 tablespoon(s) rice wine vinegar
1 tablespoon(s) honey
1 tablespoon(s) cumin seeds, lightly toasted in skillet
1/4 cup(s) chopped fresh cilantro leaves
1/4 cup(s) olive oil
1/4 cup(s) canola oil
salt and freshly ground pepper

Salad:

4 large (or 20 halved cherry tomatoes) ripe tomatoes, cut into 1-inch chunks
2 large Hass avocados, cut into 1-inch chunks
1 large red onion, thinly sliced
2 cup(s) arugula leaves
1 teaspoon(s) ground cumin
1/4 cup(s) chopped fresh cilantro leaves
Directions

For the vinaigrette, whisk together the lime juice, vinegar, honey, cumin seeds and 1/4 cup chopped cilantro in a medium bowl. Gradually whisk in the oils until emulsified. (Do not use a blender for this.) Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
Gently mix the tomatoes, avocados, onion, arugula and half of the vinaigrette in a large bowl. Check for seasoning and add more dressing, if needed. Sprinkle the ground cumin and 1/4 cup chopped cilantro over the top and serve immediately.

Feta and Mint Couscous Salad

I shop at HIT in Unterschleissheim and I am able to get all of these ingredients there or at Real in the Euro Industry Park.

FETA AND MINT COUSCOUS SALAD

1 box(es) (5.9-oz.) toasted pine nut-flavored couscous (**I substituted plain couscous and just added in pine nuts I roasted in a pan for a few minutes)
3 tomatoes
1/2 cucumber
1/4 cup(s) dried fruit (**I just used dried cranberries but anything but blueberries will work)
1 jarred roasted red pepper
2 tablespoon(s) olive oil
2 tablespoon(s) lemon juice
2 tablespoon(s) fresh mint

Directions

Prepare toasted pine nut-flavored couscous as label directs.
Meanwhile, combine chopped tomatoes, chopped cucumber, cup chopped dried fruit (any kind, or a mix of fruits) and chopped jarred roasted red pepper in a large serving bowl. Add olive oil, lemon juice and chopped fresh mint; mix well. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Fluff couscous with a fork and spoon into serving bowl. Add a 4-oz. package crumbled garlic-and-herb-flavored feta cheese or your favorite feta cheese with a teaspoon of oregano (or your favorite spice to taste, garlic and a handful of fresh parsley; toss well. Serve with baked pita, pita chips or fresh crusty bread

Biergarten w/ Gluten Free Options

I just wanted to share with you information about a Biergarten I went to a few weeks ago in Trudering. The different thing about this one is that it has many gluten-free options, for any of you with wheat intolerance or celiac disease. The website information is here: http://www.gasthof-obermaier.de/

They even gave vegetables with the kids' meals - not many places do that!

German Course for Women, With Childcare

I wish I had known about this course years ago! It's just for women, and has childcare. It meets twice a week. It costs only 40 Euros for 10 weeks of study, and covers topics necessary to women with little or no German, who must live here. For more information, see:

This course meets once a week at Messestadt-Ost and is intended primarily for children who don't speak German at home. If you're new to Germany or simply want your child to have more exposure to the German language, try it out. It only costs 2 Euros a session.

Nutella Kuchen (Chocolate, Sour Cream Cake

From Lauren Conroy:

I got [this recipe] from a German friend and just made it...it is really good...not sweet but rich.

I translated it to German and added my own information from my experience.

NUTELLA KUCHEN (CHOCOLATE, SOUR CREAM CAKE)

6 Eier/eggs
200 g Zucker (plain white sugar)
200 g Butter - room temperature ( or Rama butter substitute)
1 Päckchen Vanillezucker (vanilla or vanillen sugar sold in individual envelopes)

255 g Mehl (white 550 Flour)
1 Päckchen Backpulver (baking powder that is sold in individual envelopes)

200g Schmand/a 24% fat sour cream dairy product (for a less caloric/less dense cake, use only 3 Eßlöffel/tablespoons)
400g jar of Nutella (for less calories/less density, use only 7 LARGE Eßlöffel/tablespoons)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mix the first 5 ingredients together for about 5 minutes or until smooth; Set aside
Mix the flour and baking powder together. Add first mix, one up at a time, so that the mix remains smooth and not clumpy.
Once both mixes are combined, add schmand, a little at a time and then nutella.

Grease springform pan and fill half way or less. If extra mix, use a pan where you can spread out the mixture to be not higher than half the pan. Place on the middle rack of the oven, on a baking sheet, for even cooking.

Bake at 170c for about 45 Minutes, depending upon the oven. Upper and lower heat, NOT confection works the best for my oven. Take out of pan and cool 15-20 minutes on rack.

Der Hit ist eine Schokoglasur drüber ! (For the icing, I melt milk chocolate chips (I use the Choquer brand from HIT/REWE stores; spread over the cooled cake). I serve with fresh strawberries, sliced cherries or other favorite fruit, whip cream or your favorite ice cream.

Pediatric Dentist

When I found out I could take my son to my regular dentist just around the corner, I did. He sat on my lap as they examined him, and they even had a little toy for him at the end. It was just fine, good enough, and very convenient. And then my other son had an accident involving his teeth, and the emergency dentist told us we'd need to see a pediatric dentist the following week. I found one, and I have to say that there is a reason there are specialists. In addition to being really patient with my 2-year-old and not in a hurry (which calmed him), her practice had televisions playing cartoons above the examination tables. Her office is in Trudering, near the S-bahn station. I highly recommend her, and will continue to bring my children there, even for regular examinations. It is the difference between making the experience fun for them (and me) and making it a chore!

Child-Friendly Holiday Place

Looking for a very inexpensive holiday with the kids? Laura Curtis has recommended the following summer resort: http://www.ferienpark-bischofsmais.de/. It's about an hour and a half from Munich. She says it is far from luxurious, but is ideal for children, with numerous activities, apartments with kitchenettes rather than having to eat at restaurants (though there are board programs), and great prices.

Penguin English Camp

The Penguin English Camp and Pingouin French Camp are for children aged 6-14. They are mostly day camps. There are also art and basketball camps available (in German, I believe). For more information, check out the website: www.penguincamp.de. It's in German, but if your German is poor, perhaps you can give them a call and find an English-speaking person to help you: 08093-708032. The e-mail address is info@penguincamp.de

Pferd Pony Esel Lama & Co.

This farm has lots of activities available, but you'll need a little German to navigate their site. They have summer camp on the farm (day camp) for 6-12 year olds, and they also do children birthday parties, riding lessons, and other things that I don't fully understand because I need to work on my German. For more information, check out their website: www.sonnenland-kinderwerkstatt.de.

Children's Entertainment and Babysitting

While I haven't used this organization personally, they do come highly recommended. They specialize in entertaining and caring for children. I picked up their flyer, which says "A child's birthday or something else to celebrate? Entertainment at a summer or family event?" They have many possible options to entertain your children - clowns, magicians, face painting, and more. They can even organize child care at a large event, such as a wedding.

2) Eunate, 015784632773I was always looking for babysitters in Munich so thought I would pass this on - I hope it is useful.
Eunate is Spanish and speaks good German and some English and is looking for babysitting work in Munich. We met at our German language class in Herrsching before Christmas at which time she was working as an au pair. She has now moved to Munich to continue herGerman language education and is no longer working as an au pair hence she is now looking for some extra work. Her number is 015784632773.
All the best
